<image:caption>Finding two new cenotes after hiking in the jungle around Tulum was pretty exciting. Getting to the water with dive gear and being ready to dive, then having gear issues was super frustrating. Luckily I was able to solve the wet-breathing regulator issue. In the next installment we will get into the underwater exploration of this cenote.</image:caption>

<image:title>BLOG - Improve Your Dive Skills: Training in Mexico's cenotes - Mexican food and out of the water activities</image:title>
<image:caption>Of course being in Mexico we have the possibility to feast on delicious local food for breakfast, lunch and dinner! While a diet of tacos three times a day can get a bit much after a day or two, I enjoy sharing my favourite spots where we can grab food for the diving days. Apart from cave diving there are a whole range of above water activities - fantastic archaeological sites from the Mayan civilisations, colonial towns, amazing beaches. There are few reasons not to train in Mexico! Now with a new international airport south of Tulum there are more options than ever to get here. Once here training in the cenotes prepares divers well for diving here and in other locations. Whether your goal is to move from recreational to technical diving and start with a solid set of foundational skills in sidemount or twinset, to become a cave diver, or train on a closed circuit rebreather, the environment lends itself to helping you improve as a diver.</image:caption>

<image:title>BLOG - True darkness? Light failures and cave diving - We are living in a time where advances in diving technology mean that light failures should be very unlikely. Modern LED and lithium battery technology gives us reliable, powerful lights with long durations. If cave divers follow procedures, making sure they start the dive with charged, working lights, light failures should not occur. (Or at least not often, unlike in the 1970s and 1980s when Sheck Exley was drawing on past accidents). Diving in a team that is looking out for each member, has good light awareness and light discipline. Should mean the team is quick to realise if a light has failed, and that light failures are merely an inconvenience. Once a failure has happened, the team can begin to exit the cave calmly with light.</image:title>

<image:title>BLOG - Why Sidemount? - Accessibility for Divers with Physical Limitations</image:title>
<image:caption>Sidemount diving has opened up new possibilities for divers with physical limitations. The flexibility and adjustability of the sidemount configuration make it an inclusive option for individuals with mobility issues or physical disabilities. Rather than being unable to dive anymore because of difficulty accessing tank valves in doubles, positioning the tanks on the sides makes diving more accessible. I recently had a shoulder injury that affected the mobility of my left shoulder and made it impossible to manipulate the valve. So, it was not safe for me to dive doubles, but I had no trouble reaching my valves in sidemount. The ability to don and doff tanks in the water further enhances accessibility. Rather than having to carry heavy loads out of the water, we can doff tanks and pass them up to boat crews or leave them at the water’s edge.</image:caption>

<image:title>BLOG - Exploring the Blue Abyss: Deep Cave Dive Project - Make it stand out</image:title>
<image:caption>After a rest day, we were back at Cenote Nohoch, finally managing to get there before 8am!! It was an uneventful ride and descent into the Abyss, so soon enough we were ready to start checking our leads from the previous dive. I was first up; he tied the reel into the tie-off at one hundred meters and laid a line down into a silty room which very quickly opened up into a nice-sized tunnel. Cries of triumph very quickly became disappointment when after three shots the tunnel ended. As I was laying the line, Jake surveyed along behind. Once the tunnel ended and the line was cut, we turned and continued to Jake’s lead. Unfortunately, this one did not continue either, which wasn’t totally disappointing as it silted out almost immediately and the soft rock broke while making tie-offs. At this point our bottom time had been less than we had planned for, so we shallowed up and decided to resurvey some of the other ‘shallow’ lines at seventy meters. On the way up through our decompression stops we had to also bring up our additional tanks and DPVs. Our decompression went well, with us enjoying our standard ‘meal’ of Powerade and baby food while kicking back and watching one of the recent Transformers films. And then the ride out was annoying but smooth – we each had five tanks!</image:caption>

      <image:title>BLOG - Shearwater Petrel 3 — review - Handling a CCR Flood: A Real-World Bailout Experience in European Cave Diving</image:title>
<image:caption>This summer, while travelling in Europe my CCR monitor flooded! I was diving along and the screen started to flicker and then seemed to ‘reboot’. This was a bit of a non-event; we were already exiting the cave, I switched to open circuit and continued to exit. This is the standard procedure known as “bailing out”; if a CCR diver can’t see the monitoring device, they don’t know what mix they are breathing. After bailing out, I had plenty of gas on me, and was with two other divers. We got up to the first deco tank we had staged the day before, a nitrox 50%. I picked it up, followed the procedure and switched to nitrox 50. Once I had done this, I changed over my stand alone computer and we continued toward the exit to pick up the O2 tank we had also staged close to the cave entry.</image:caption>

<image:title>BLOG - Shearwater Petrel 3 — review - Revolutionizing Dive Monitoring: Exploring the Petrel’s 4-Transmitter Wireless Tank Pressureit Feature in 2024</image:title>
<image:caption>The biggest change, but the one I have used the least, is the ability for the Petrel to connect to up to four wireless transmitters for tank pressures. This is something I am looking forward to playing with in 2024! Having four transmitters would be perfect for my deep diving configuration and will allow for easy monitoring of gas pressures. As for day to day diving, a transmitter on my oxygen first stage will allow for easy monitoring of this precious resource in a way that doesn’t get in the way.</image:caption>

<image:title>BLOG - PANNIKIN PLAINS PUSH PROJECT - Make it stand out</image:title>
<image:caption>In April 2023 I was lucky enough to participate in an expedition to dive in Pannikin Plains cave. I wrote an article for the Shearwater community blog about the expedition. Having never been to the Nullabor for cave diving, I was super excited to see some of the caves there, having heard about their size and beauty, and experience this kind of expedition cave diving. The Nullabor is super remote, the nearest city, Perth, was 12 12-hour dive away. This cave was closed for cave diving without special permits following a collapse in 1988 that trapped divers inside the dry section. You can watch a documentary about the amazing exploration dives they were doing back then, and the collapse.</image:caption>

<image:title>BLOG - PANNIKIN PLAINS PUSH PROJECT - Make it stand out</image:title>
<image:caption>In April 2023 I was fortunate to join an expedition to dive in a cave that people rarely dive in Western Australia. This place is in the Nullarbor Plain, part of a large desert. Even for Australia, it is far, far, from anywhere. People rarely dive in Pannikin Plains, partly because of the effort required to access the water, and partly because it was only reopened for diving, for adequately experienced and qualified cave divers, in 2018. The goal of the expedition was to continue exploration in the hopes of finding another giant, on-going cave tunnel. Finding another mega tunnel in the area would be like finding the holy grail (our trip theme song, and the expedition team are all Monty Python fans). This was my first trip to dive the Nullabor caves, and what an amazing experience it was!</image:caption>

<image:caption>The entrance looking up from the bottom of the zip line. Climbing up a vertical chimney and squeezing under a fallen boulder, you emerge at the bottom of a steep pyramid shaped hill. Ryan named the chamber Chapel Hill, and scouted the other side for water. He found a very small surface lake, and managed a dive in sump three (sumps are the water filled sections of dry cave) into a small room ending in a restriction. In their 2017 expedition, Stephen Fordyce, Stefan Eberhard, and Ryan pushed through a restriction from a surface lake in sump three to find more going passages on the other side. But due to other projects and the Covid pandemic, plans to return were never realized until 2023. The plan for our expedition was to push sump three and hopefully break out into power cave, the holy grail for exploration.</image:caption>

<image:caption>As this was our final day of diving, we also had to bring all of our tanks and other equipment out of the cave. And then spent a day hauling, winching and portaging gear out of the cave. Thanks to the rigging and perseverance of Steve and Stew a functional system was set up where two tanks (or DPVs, caving bags) could be connected to ropes and pulled up the pitch and the flying fox at the same time. This was accomplished by signals being passed up from the bottom of the pitch via radio to teams at the top of the pitch and bottom of the flying fox, who then called up to Stew. Stew, at the top of the flying fox, in turn lowered a flag which was the signal for Andrea in her truck to drive slowly away - winching up the rope and the connected items. With this elaborate system in place, we were able to haul out all of the gear in one day. — PHOTO: Me receiving a tank on the flying fox.</image:caption>

<image:caption>So what’s next? Well, there are still many leads to push from both cenotes. There is a very clear trend that the cave is blocked to the northwest by collapse and breakdowns. I am optimistic that with enough time, we will be able to find a way on and break out in that direction. Hopefully, we will have the opportunity to return during 2023 for a few days diving in Plasma Torus and continue the exploration!</image:caption>

<image:caption>Earlier this year I happened to be guiding a former student in Corazón del Paraíso. It was awesome to be back diving in that cave! Big tunnels really cool flowing haloclines, interesting decorations, and small silty passages. The cave is really varied! Being back there made me think there might have been some unfinished exploration. Many of the lines I laid there in 2018 were done on open circuit, now with the rebreather the potential to find more cave or even a connection was there!</image:caption>

      <image:title>BLOG - Return to Corazón - The 2018 explorations</image:title>
<image:caption>Back in 2018 after resurveying the existing cave lines (everything upstream and 1000m / 3000ft downstream), I found some new passages. Many of these didn’t go very far, but some I added in the saltwater did go some distance. In total, I managed to add around 3,500 feet of new line. Much of the exploration was done in pretty silty conditions because as soon as I would exhale, percolation would cascade down. This meant that I only would have one chance to pick a direction before zero visibility closed in. Many of the ends of my lines were left with comments like ‘could go, small and silty’. So a return was not high on the priority list! At the end of 2019, I did return with Tamara May and we explored another 500 feet of challenging salt-water passages. But again nothing was significantly going, lots of silt and breakdowns to navigate.</image:caption>

      <image:title>BLOG - Return to Corazón</image:title>
<image:caption>Another day I went back to check some of my ends of line from 2018. On my survey notes from back then, there was the comment ‘cave goes small’. Probably why I never went back! But not wanting to leave any possibility unchecked, with the sidewinder it was time to go back! One of the lines continued through a snakey, zigzag tunnel which didn’t really go the direction I wanted to push. The other line dipped in and out of saltwater before I popped up in a surprisingly big room. Looking around the walls for a way on, I checked the directions I wanted to push. But nothing, then turning back towards where I had come I saw a lead off to my left. Swimming over to it unfortunately I saw that disturbed sediment had already drifted into the potential way on. Deciding that exploration in clear water is way more effective, efficient, and safe, I cut free my reel, tied off the line, and began to survey out. Since the last dive, I have been pretty booked up teaching so haven’t been able to go back. But one of these days when I have a spare day or two it’s going to be time to build the sidewinder, charge the Seacraft and Mnemo survey device, feel the exploration reel and go back!</image:caption>

<image:caption>While much of the world is on virus lockdown, down here is something to keep you entertained and wet the appetite for cave diving! I’m going to tell you about some of the equipment and techniques we have been using recently for cave exploration here in Mexico. As it has gotten quite long already, this section will focus on Seacraft DPVs and the Sidewinder Closed Circuit Rebreather. Recently, in March, I tagged along for a few dives in an exploration project with the other Sidewinder divers at ProTec. There is going to be an announcement soon about the exploration and a pretty significant connection made between cave systems, so I won’t write much about that, but more about the equipment that enabled the exploration. This article aIso touches on exploration of a very different styIe of cave and some generalities from exploration in two other caves using the same gear.</image:caption>

      <image:title>BLOG - Equipment For Exploration</image:title>
<image:caption>This time things were different. Using equipment combinations and techniques that Patrick and Phillip practiced in Madagascar we were able to do some very productive exploration dives. First of all the Seacraft DPVs have been a game-changer. Being able to change speed while driving is incredible! Now rather than come off the trigger completely we can power down to lower speeds to negotiate the smaller sections of the cave before increasing speed in bigger tunnels. While it may not sound a huge change, you definitely feel the difference and even scootering at slow speeds is more efficient than swimming. This means we have been able to reach far sections of the cave sooner, cutting our overall transit times and allowing more time for productive exploration. I mean if we take all the effort to get to that point, it’s nice to be able to empty reels! Then, having the battery life clearly displayed, with the time remaining at each speed is always reassuring, and more importantly, how long we could continue to use them. Depending on where in the cave we planned to go on the next day we could decide to leave the DPVs in the cave for the next day’s dives.</image:caption>

<image:title>BLOG - Santa Maria Rediscovery and Exploration - Make it stand out</image:title>
<image:caption>According to Jim Coke at the Quintana Roo Speleological Survey the cave was historically reported as Cenote San Pedro. It was first explored in 2007 by Alex Anisimov and Victor Trostyanskiy. Bil Phillips and Tristan Bond Evans followed the Russian leads and explored three more smaller side passages in 2012. Later there was some further small passages added by unknown explorers, Mariano Schaller and Noe Caffesse. My first task was a systematic resurvey of the lines and mark potential leads to return to. See image of the map! With only 1600 foot of existing line this was easily done over two dives with just sidemount tanks. At the end of the second resurvey dive, I noticed that the cave seemed to open up at the bottom of the slope. Tying into the end of the existing line I descended down the slope, paused and looked to the side. Past a restriction the cave opened up. And the water was that electric blue characteristic of a salt water section!! Boom! Mega cool, going, cave tunnel! A few dives later and the cave continued to grow. It was not an easy cave to explore with the north west to south east orientation typical of cave in the area not being the case here. Pushing through the salt water section the cave became shallower and went south. The southern section is characterised by swiss cheese like velcro rock, a mixing layer between the salt and fresh waters and heavy percolation. Subsequent dives resulted in additional lines short cutting between the main line and the salt water section, creating a nice circuit and a quick and easy route to the southern line. These initial dives were done alone, but as a team project in Muyil was slowing down, ProTec team members joined in the efforts.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Once Riordan had a working design other materials were tested. He bought PVC sheets, cut it into circles with a skill saw and added slots with a hacksaw. Due to the material, this design was positively buoyant. The next generation of the cookie came after one of Riordan’s students offered to machine cut some. Designs were drawn up in a computer program and cut-using laser cutter. This design was able to be made in bulk and came in yellow and white. Riordan sold these off to friends and other local divers within days of receiving them. Many divers liked the idea of having a marker they could rely on to be where they left it when they returned!</image:caption>

<image:title>BLOG - Enhancing Diver Safety — The Impact of the Cave Cookie's Introduction and Expansion - The commercialization of the cookie</image:title>
<image:caption>In 1998 Dive Rite purchased the idea and design of the cookie. They began to commercially manufacture and sell the cookie for divers everywhere. Since then there has been many variations and different designs using different methods of production and materials, such as injection molds. Halcyon’s smaller cookies, Apeks are two different examples of these variations. However, Riordan still holds that the original size and shape are his preferred. From clothespins to several options for non-directional markers, dive gear has and will continue to evolve. The cookie was an innovative solution to a problem that was compromising diver safety, exploration and training.
